Television

channel-columnJodie McNee and Sara Powell will be playing regular roles in ITV’s recently announced factual drama Little Boy Blue. Written by Jeff Pope and directed by Paul Whittington (Cilla, Mrs Biggs), this four part drama focuses on the murder of 11 year-old Rhys Jones in Croxteth, Liverpool in 2007 and the efforts of his parents to gain justice. Filming is now underway and will also feature Kent Riley and Howard Ward in guest roles across the series. Gary Oliver and Scott Karim join the cast of Britannia, Sky’s new 10 parter written by Jez Butterworth whilst Pooky Quesnel joins Hayley Carmichael in the E4/Netflix production Kiss Me First based on Lottie Moggarch’s thriller novel about stolen identity in the digital world. Melanie Kilburn and Tony Guilfoyle, meanwhile, feature in new Jimmy McGovern drama Broken, a 6 parter for the BBC and Thomas Coombes films the recurring role of Brother Anthony in Knightfall shooting in Prague for the History Channel.

In film news Carol Macready and Josie Walker film Amma Asante’s forthcoming drama Where Hands Touch set in Berlin during WW2, Nicholas Lumley films the sequel to Paddington playing Old Timer Jack and Alex Felton and Alex Blake shoot the Richard Eyre directed Children Act. Looking ahead, Roger Sloman and Nicholas Lumley begin rehearsals on the new Mike Leigh feature about the Peterloo massacre due to shoot 2017.

Jodie McNee heads to Prague to shoot Jez Butterworth’s epic 10 part Sky/Amazon drama Britannia in which she plays Mackenzie Crook’s sidekick Willa. Hayley Carmichael plays Alice Mayhew the BBC 1/Mammoth Screen two-parter Witness for the Prosecution, an adaptation of Agatha Christie short story by the same name. She then goes on to shoot Kiss Me First a new tv show from Skins creator Bryan Elsley for E4 and Netflix. Also for Netflix, Chris Gordon will return for series two of The Crown in which he returns as Prince Phillips valet John Dean. Sophie Stone also joins the cast as Prince Philip’s mother, Princess Alice of Greece. Sophie has also been filming the pivotal role of Lucy Yolland in the new BBC adaptation of Wilkie Collins’ novel The Moonstone

In Comedy drama; Ken Bones plays Nathan Clore in The Jonathan Creek Christmas Special, Joe Sims plays butcher Thomas Rice in Carnival’s ever popular Lucky Man, Jay Simpson joins the cast of Retort’s Royal sitcom The Royal Blues, Tony Guilfoyle shoots new period satire Decline and Fall for Tiger aspect, Joe May shoots series 6 of the hit comedy Trollied and Howard Ward and Alex Felton film the fourth season of Drifters whilst Sophie Duval can be seen in the forthcoming series of Chewing Gum.

Gary Oliver meanwhile shoots series 2 of CBC drama X Company in Budapest, Alex Blake shoots new BBC brothel drama Harlots, Rhys Rusbatch films Sherlock for the BBC, Sarah Winman and Sandy Foster join the cast for Season 6 of Call The Midwife, Geraldine Alexander and Howard Ward shoot documentary drama experiment The Jury directed by Nick Holt and Natalie Radmall Quirke shoots a new 4 part drama for RTE titled Cheaters.

Alex Blake and Howard Ward will join the cast of Richard Eyre’s new film The Children Act adapted from Ian McEwan’s award winning novel, shooting this Autumn. This season also see’s Jordan Mifsúd premier in Irish Netflix film The Siege of Jadotville, Oliver Dench star in Nickelodeon’s Ride and Daniel Coonan, Alex Felton and David Nellist’s debut in The Discovery Channel’s Harley and The Davidsons.

On screen now catch Terry Beesley playing Buxton in Victoria on ITV, Rose O’loughlin in RTE’s Small Town and Sophie Duval playing Clothilde in The Collection for Amazon Prime.

News Update 12/06/16On film, Jay Simpson shoots The 101 Year Old Man, the sequel to the award winning comic thriller – The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared based on the global bestseller by Jonas Jonasson. Jodie Mc Nee meanwhile joins the cast of Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, a period feature which will be directed by Paul McGuigan. Pooky Quesnel joins the regular cast of CLASS, the 8 part Doctor Who spin off for BBC written by Patrick Ness and produced by Stephen Moffat whilst Thomas Coombes begins filming the prequel to Linda LaPlante’s Prime Suspect; Tennison. Charlotte Lucas joins the Broadchurch cast for seres 3 ‘Returning Home’ and Olwen May films the second series of Ordinary Lies for the BBC. Sara Powell plays regular Cass in Jo Brand and Morwenna Banks’ new Channel 4 dark comedy about Children’s Services in the South East and Aidan Kelly plays the role of Calvin in Series 2 of No Offence. Joseph May meanwhile shoots the 5th and final series of Episodes as series regular Andy Button with Jenna Augen also joining the cast. And Cosima Shaw heads to Budapest to shoot MARS a futuristic mini-series set in 2032 and directed by visionary Mexican filmmaker Everardo Gout for the National Geographic Channel.

20160301Josie Walker will play Mrs Gogan and Stephen Kennedy Fluther Good in a revival of Sean O’Casey’s Plough and The Stars, directed by Howard Davies for The National Theatre and marking the centenary of the Easter Rising. Also for The National, Pooky Quesnel joins the cast of The Suicide in a fresh adaptation of Erdman’s original script relocated to contemporary London directed by Nadia Fall. Tom Edden will play The Good Angel in The Jamie Lloyd Company’s West End Production of Dr Faustus with Kit Harrington in the title role whilst at the Royal Exchange, Jodie McNee takes on the role of Kay in Sarah Waters’ The Night Watch directed by Rebecca Gatward. Sam Alexander returns to Hampstead Theatre in Howard Brenton’s new play Lawrence After Arabia with John Dove directing, Hywel Morgan joins the cast of the RSC’s The Alchemist directed by Polly Findlay, Natasha Gordon joins Mel Giedroyc in Simon Dormandy’s production of Luce at the Southwark Playhouse and Michelle Bonnard plays Jess in The Quiet House by Bruntwood Prize winning writer Gareth Farr at The Park Theatre. For the West Yorkshire Playhouse and London’s South Bank Centre, Carla Harrison Hodge plays Avocado and Pomegranate in two hander The Fruit Trilogy, 3 short plays from the Tony Award winning playwright of the Vagina Monologues Eve Ensler whilst over at The Birmingham Rep Sophie Stone plays the Postmaster in Artistic Director Roxanna Silbert’s innovative new production of Gogol’s The Government Inspector. Kent Riley20160114 Screen will play the regular role of Barry in Brief Encounters, ITV’s new 6 part drama about the women and party planners behind Ann Summers filming from January. Jodie McNee joins the cast of the brilliant Ripper Street with Daniel Nettheim directing whilst Lisa Palfrey will film Hinterland the popular Welsh drama for BBC4 also filming early 2016. David Nellist films Taboo, the Ridley Scott produced new mini series starring Tom Hardy, Joe Sims will guest in the cult hit Red Dwarf and Geraldine Alexander films Marcella, ITV’s new 8 part drama from the creator of The Bridge. Pooky Quesnel films the last block of The A Word, BBC’s new drama that centres around an autistic child, Ken Bones finishes filming on Medici and newcomer Oliver Dench lands a leading role in new Nickelodeon drama Let It Ride shooting across Canada and Northern Ireland until Easter. In film, Sara Powell shoots Denial, David Hare’s new Holocaust drama whilst Gary Oliver has just completed filming on the feature Bitter Harvest, in which he plays Joseph Stalin directed by George Mendeluk.

Coming up on screen early in 2016, Stephen Kennedy appears in Lucky Man on Sky 1 as well as Private Peaceful, Michael Morpurgo’s World War 1 drama which will making its network premiere on BBC1 late Jan. Sam Alexander guests in Call the Midwife, Joe Sims will be in Beowulf ITV’s epic new fantasy drama and Terence Beesley can be seen in the BBC’s epic new drama War and Peace. Look out for Terry too in The Musketeers alongside Melanie Kilburn who also guests in BBC’s returning drama series.

20150831-6-VerticalGavin Spokes will play Nicely Nicely in Chichester Festival Theatre’s West End transfer of the critically acclaimed Guys and Dolls playing at The Savoy Theatre. Ferdy Roberts returns to the Royal Court in the role of Jez in Plaques and Tangles which will be directed by Lucy Morrison in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. Michelle Bonnard will play Maxine in American playwright Marcus Gardley’s A Wolf in Snakeskin Shoes at the Tricycle Theatre directed by Indu Rubasingham whilst at The Print Room Richard Dempsey takes on the role of Edward in TS Elliot’s  The Cocktail Party directed by Abbey Wright.

Thomas Coombes will appear in a revival of Barbarians (for which he won an Offie in 2013), as Tooting Arts Club bring Barrie O’Keefe’s play back to the site specific former St Martins School of Art in central London. For Actors Touring Company, meanwhile, Farshid Rokey and Kriss Dosanjh join the cast of Martyr a story of a young radicalised Christian boy directed by Rahmin Grey. Robert Hands is currently in rehearsals for Mouthful at The Trafalgar Studios and Hayley Carmichael will appear in First Love Is The Revolution, a new play written by Rita Kalnejais’s to be directed by Steve Marmion for Soho Theatre.
Out of town Sara Powell plays Tituba in The Crucible at The Bristol Old Vic directed by Tom Morris; Jess Murphy joins the cast of ATG’s new musical The Choir directed by Dominic Hill at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow.Scott Karim plays Helmholtz in The Royal and Derngate’s Brave New World directed by James Dacre.

On stage we are pleased to confirm that Tafline Steen will reprise her role as Jess in The Broadway transfer of the Olivier Award winning Charles III which will run at The Music Box Theatre this autumn. Jodie McNee, meanwhile, returns to The National Theatre where she will play Liz Morden in Nadia Fall’s revival of Our Country’s Good. Lisa Palfrey has started rehearsals for The Seagull at Regents Park which Matthew Dunster is directing in a new version by Torben Betts and Ferdy Roberts will transfer with Lampedusa, Anders Lustgarten’s new political elegy, which will be at Soho Theatre from the end of June. Chris Harper will play Benedick in The Globe’s Much Ado About Nothing with Max Webster directing, Robert Hands opens in Sunspots at Hampstead Theatre with Charlotte Gwimmer directing, Gavin Spokes returns to the West End in Headlong’s revival of 1984 and Richard Dempsey opens as Reggie in Rob Ashford’s Chichester staging of A Damsel in Distress.

Graham Turner has opened in Mark Rosenblatt’s Uncle Vanya at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Colm Gormley starts his run as Ted Narracott in the National Theatre’s West End production of Warhorse this month.

270114Scott Karim returns to the National in Shahid Nadeem’s ‘Dara’ directed by Nadia Fall. Jodie McNee starts rehearsals for Mike Bartlett’s provocative new play GAME directed by Sacha Wares in an imaginative restaging by designer Miriam Buether at The Almeida. Ferdy Roberts will headline the Vaults festival in Filter Theatre’s interpretation of Macbeth in which he plays the title role.

Thomas Coombes will play Nojd in Strindberg’s The Father directed by Abby Wright at The Trafalgar Studios whilst Colm Gormley joins the West End production of The National Theatre’s War Horse playing Ted Narracott. Angela Terence meanwhile is at The Gate in The Chronicles of Kalki directed by JMK winner Alex Brown.

Out of London Geraldine Alexander continues touring with The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time and Gavin Spokes plays Francis Henshall in One Man Two Guvnors both for the National Theatre. At The West Yorkshire Playhouse Graham Turner plays Telegin Waffles in Mark Rosenblatt’s Uncle Vanya.

What to see? Our New Year’s tips

17th December 2014Kickstarting January is the second series of Broadchurch in which Joe Sims reprises his role as Nigel Carter in the gripping crime drama. Also on ITV this January Hermione Gulliford plays regular Elizabeth Addis in Foyles War which returns with three new 2 hour films. On BBC2 Wolf Hall premiers featuring Max Fowler in the Peter Kosminsky screen adaptation of Hillary Mantel’s books. Mr Selfridge returns for a third series introducing Rocky Marshall as new regular DI Purkiss whilst Pooky Quesnel gains a promotion in the tenth and final series of Waterloo Road, on screens from January.

On film, catch Ridley Scott’s epic Exodus ‘Gods and Kings’ featuring Ken Bones opening in cinemas on Boxing Day. Kenneth Branagh’s much talked about live action Cinderella is scheduled for release early 2015 with Tom Edden as the Lizard Footman whilst The Royal Exchanges’ recently filmed Hamlet, featuring Jodie McNee also gains a cinema release early next year. Expect The Pride with Lisa Palfrey and Mr Turner also with Tom Edden to feature brightly during awards season.

On stage, recent openings playing during the holidays include Daniel Coonan as the menacing Black Dog in Polly Findley’s Treasure Island for The National Theatre. Also for the National, Jodie McNee and Hermione Gulliford continue their run in Three Winters. Matt Rawle plays stowaway Billy Crocker in Anything Goes at The Sheffield Cruicible and Vincenzo Nicoli is the Mafioso Duke of Venice in Ruper Goold’s inspired staging of Merchant of Venice at The Almeida.

Completing their West End runs in January are Ferdy Roberts (Shakespeare in Love), Tafline Steen (King Charles III) and Scott Karim (Great Britain) whilst Tom Edden (Les Misérables) and Richard Dempsey (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory) will continue into the new year.

Geraldine Alexander, meanwhile, opens at The Lowry, Manchester as Siobhan in The National’s Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time which is now touring whilst Gavin Spokes continues his hugely successful run as Francis Henshell in the One Man 2 Guvnors also touring with The National Theatre.
