Spring Stage

Laura Rogers has been cast in the new Jack Thorne play When Winston Went To The War On The Wireless. Katy Rudd directs and the play premiers at the Donmar next month. Tom Edden will reprise his role as Bella Zangler as Chichester Theatre’s hit revival of Crazy For You transfers to the Gillian Lynne theatre West End from June 2023. Meanwhile, Tamsin Carrol and Fred Haig journey to Chichester for this year’s summer staging of Rock Follies in the Minerva directed by Dominic Cooke. Sandy Foster returns to the RSC in Falkland Sound, a new play that opens 40 years after the Falklands Islands were invaded, directed by Aaron Parsons and the world premiere of Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake with David Nellist in the title role tours the UK from this spring. Dorothea Myer Bennett opens in Possession, a powerful new play by Sasha Hails depicting motherhood and colonialism at The Arcola and Molly Logan returns to The Globe in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Ellie White directing.

Greg Hicks continues in the award winning Oklahoma at The Wyndhams, John Mackay, Dan Rabin and Mariah Louca all reprise their roles in The Doctor when Robert Icke’s production plays in New York at the Park Avenue Armory and Jenna Augen continues to play on Broadway in the transfer of Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt directed by Patrick Marber.

Film & TV

Andrew Koji shoots back to back feature films – SENECA with John Malkovich directed by Robert Schwentke and BOY KILLS WORLD with Bill Skarsgård, director Moritz Mohr. Jakob Diehl joins the cast of ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE, Steven Knight’s adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize Winning novel directed by Shawn Levy for Netflix .

Thomas Coombes has been shooting STREET DOGS with director Jamie Payne also for Netflix and goes onto film RAIN DOGS , an original drama for HBO/BBC. Jodie McNee films CULPRITS for Disney and Hulu , an 8 part heist drama written and directed by J.Blakeson and Sara Powell films brand new psychological thriller THE WINTER CHILD with Dominic Le Clerc directing.

Gavin Spokes joins the regular cast of new drama series BETTER for Sister Pictures/BBC and Michelle Bonnard returns as Sal in UNFORGOTTEN 5. Carol Macready films the new season of STRIKE: TROUBLED BLOOD and Eugene O’Hare returns for Season 6 of OUTLANDER as Gov Josiah Martin. Melanie Kilburn joins Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark in STARVE ACRE for BBC Films whilst Aidan Kelly films US thriller JERICHO RIDGE with Will Gilbey directing.

Theatre

Greg Hicks will be seen in Daniel Fish’s Tony Award winning revival of OKLAHOMA which transfers to The Young Vic. Carol Macready joins Anne Marie Duff in the Almeida production of THE HOUSE OF SHADES directed by Blanche McIntyre. Olwen May leads the cast in The Manchester Royal Exchange’s production of ELECTRIC ROSARY by Bruntwood Prize winner Tim Foley and Anita Reynolds has been cast in the Old Vic production of A MONSTER CALLS .

Tom Edden, currently in New York with Jamie Lloyd’s award winning CYRANO returns to play in Chichester Festival’s revival of CRAZY FOR YOU directed by Broadway legend Susan Stroman. Sam Alexander will play Teddy in Bath Theatre Royals’ tour of Pinter’s THE HOMECOMING and Laura Rogers has been cast as Countess Andrenyi in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS opposite Henry Goodman as Hercule Poirot.

Christopher Harper will play the leading role of Professor Robert Langdon in THE DA VINCI CODE touring from May and Richard Teverson joins the cast of WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION playing at London County Hall. Look out too for Mariah Louca in Soho Theatre’s new musical THE MINISTRY OF LESBIAN AFFAIRS.

New Year Update

Screen View

Belfast, Kenneth Branagh’s acclaimed film which has garnered much awards talk opens across the UK on 21 January and features Josie Walker in the role of Auntie Violet.  Also on general release and opening to brilliant reviews is Boiling Point, a one shot film that takes place during service in a busy London restaurant and with Thomas Coombes playing opposite Stephen Graham as Mr Lovejoy.  Hotel Portofino with Oliver Dench as Lucien premieres on Brit Box at the end of January and Harlan Coban’s Stay Close is now streaming on Netflix starring Cush Jumbo and featuring Aidan Kelly as series reg Rudi.  

Roy Williams drama Screw is showing on Channel 4 with Nicholas Lumley playing prison regular Larry and Daniel Crossley plays Bernard McDonald in Rules of the Game – a four part thriller with Maxine Peake, currently on BBC  iPlayer.  Also on iPlayer and a timely reminder to protect our BBC is Olwyn May in A Very British Scandal, Roger Sloman in Mandy, Thomas Coombes in Eastenders, Joseph May in the fantastic revival of Toast of Tinseltown and for the kids, Emma Handy in The Beaker Girls and Jason Callender in Malory Towers.

Back On Stage

It’s exciting to see some of our ladies leading NT productions as we make our way back to theatre. Tamsin Carroll has opened in Hex (Olivier) Laura Rogers in The Ocean at the End of the Lane (The Duke of York’s West End ) and  Sophie Stone in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime (NT Touring). Also, Jodie McNee will be playing Nora in Manchester Royal Exchanges new production of The Doll’s House to be directed by Bryony Shanahan. 

James Doherty returns to the West End in Come From Away and other theatre opening soon includes Tom Edden in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Cyrano (West End & BAM), Joe Sims in Bristol Old Vic’s The Red Lion, and Mariah Louca in Cherry Jezebel a new play which will premiere at Liverpool’s Everyman in February. 

Autumn Watch
Part II

On Screen:

Jodie McNee can be seen in Series 3 of Britannia on Sky and will next be seen in new 4 part ITV drama Hollington Drive which airs from late September. Oliver Dench and Greg Hicks both guest star in Sky Atlantic’s Dominia and watch out for Oliver in the new year in brand new drama Hotel Portofino as well. Josie Walker plays Auntie Violet in Kenneth Branagh’s feature film Belfast which premieres in the UK in November. 

Andrew Koji’s recent feature Snake Eyes is now on general release and will be available on home media in October and Chris Harper appears in The War Below streaming now on Amazon.   Also upcoming on Amazon is thriller All The Old Knives directed by Janus Metz and featuring Karina Wiedman and arrives this autumn. Watch out too for the release of Danny Boyle’s new Sex Pistols drama Lonely Boy based on guitarist Steve Jones’ memoir and in which Jay Simpson plays his abusive stepfather Ron. 

On Stage:

Tamsin Carroll leads the National Theatre production of Hex this Autumn – a twist on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale,  Rufus Norris directs. Laura Rogers has opened in the Hampstead Theatre revival of The Memory of Water and is currently in rehearsals for the West End transfer of National Theatre production of The Ocean at the End of the Lane at the Duke of York’s. 
Jenna Augen and Dorothea Myer Bennett return in Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt at The Wyndham’s Theatre and James Doherty is back in Come From Away at The Phoenix Theatre. 

John Mackay and Hayley Carmichael join the cast of HOME in this revival for Chichester Festival of the modern David Storey classic directed by Josh Roche and Patrick Brennan takes the lead role of Phil in Broken Lad, a new play by Robin Hooper directed by Richard Spier at The Arcola. Also this autumn Jordan Mifsúd revives his role as Colbert in While the Sun Shines at the Orange Tree and Christopher Harper returns in the dual roles of Lesgate and Hubbard in the UK tour of Dial M For Murder directed by Anthony Banks.

Ben Dilloway in Frost/Nixon at the Crucible, Sheffield

Gavin Spokes returns to the West End playing Charles Ingram, ‘the coughing major’ in James Graham’s new play Quiz. Directed by Daniel Evans, the Chichester Festival Production opens for a limited season at the Noel Coward Theatre from 31 March 2018. (click to watch trailer) Anita Reynolds joins the cast of Absolute Hell at the National Theatre with Joe Hill Gibbons directing and Laura Rogers plays the leading role of Kay Summersby in the London premier of Pressure opening at the Park Theatre. Other openings include Ben Dilloway as Jack Brennan in The Sheffield Crucible’s production of Frost/Nixon directed by Kate Hewitt, Christopher Harper in ATG’s Strangers On A Train which tours until April and Daniel Rabin in the West End transfer of Robert Ike’s critically acclaimed Mary Stewart playing at The Duke of Yorks Theatre. Josie Walker and Tamsin Carroll, meanwhile, continue in acclaimed new musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie whose run has been extended at the Apollo Theatre until Christmas 2018 (click to watch trailer).
Sandy Foster returns to the RSC as Joan in a new play about the life of Joan Littlewood, also for the RSC Graham Turner reprises his Fool in King Lear for a New York transfer whilst Kate Fahy reprises her role as Maggie Thatcher in the US premiere of Handbagged opening in Washington DC. George Caple plays Alex in A Clockwork Orange and Patrick Brennan Iago in Othello both for Liverpool Everyman, Nicholas Lumley joins the NT touring production of This House whilst Molly Logan plays Ethel in Lucy Bailey’s production of Love From a Stranger, also on tour.

Autumn Theatre Preview

Josie Walker returns to the West End with Sheffield Crucible’s production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie in which she plays the lead role of Margaret; Jonathan Butterell directs opening at The Apollo Theatre in November. Olwen May plays the Butcher in St George and the Dragon with Lyndsey Turner directing for The National Theatre whilst Clemmie Sveaas will begin rehearsals for Pinocchio with John Tiffany directing. Also opening at The National this Autumn for a limited run is Oslo with Geraldine Alexander and Howard Ward, transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre from October. Tom Edden returns to the West End as he takes on the role of Mr Wormwood in Matilda for the RSC at The Cambridge Theatre. Lisa Palfrey, meanwhile continues as Big Mama in the Young Vic’s production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof at The Apollo. Scott Karim joins Nicholas Hytner’s exciting new venture at the Bridge Theatre for his inaugural show Young Marx, Geoff Leesley transfers with Trouble in Mind, Laurence Boswell’s acclaimed production from Theatre Royal Bath coming to the Print Room Coronet and Jenna Augen plays Val in The Knowledge at the Charing Cross Theatre with Maureen Lipman directing.

Laura Rogers joins the cast of Rules For Living with Simon Godwin directing for ETT with Natalie Radmall Quirke also joining the company playing the lead role of Valerie in their celebrated revival of The Weir. Meanwhile at The Royal Exchange, Sophie Stone starts rehearsals for their much anticipated stage adaptation of the cult film Jubilee, Carol Macready, Kriss Dosangh head to Home Manchester for Walter Meierjohann’s production of Uncle Vanya and Patricia Allison plays Susan in The Harper Elliot/West Yorkshire Playhouse co production of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe directed by Sally Cookson.

TV Update:

Pooky Quesnel returns to The A Word, BBCs groundbreaking drama centring around the family of an autistic boy. Pooky reprises her role as Louise for Series 2. Also recommissioned for a second series is National Geographic’s MARS. Cosima Shaw returns as astronaut Lesley in the innovative sci- fi adventure set in the perhaps not too distant future. Max Fowler will begin filming on State of Happiness an epic new drama series for Maipo Film exploring the Norwegian oil boom of the 1970s. Petter Noess Oscar nominated director of Elling is at the helm. Ken Bones, meanwhile, appears as the Papal Envoy across Season 3 of the hugely popular Versailles for Capa Drama and Canal+.
Back home Geraldine Alexander joins Benedict Cumberbatch in one off BBC 90 minute drama The Child in Time an adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel about the grief and loss of a couple directed by Julian Farino. Scott Karim films Crazy Diamond (Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K Dick) with Marc Munden for Left Bank/Channel 4. Hywel Morgan films the E4/Netflix produced The End Of The F**king World based on the American comic book. Laura Rees plays Dotti and Melissa Vaughan Sear in The City and the City a Mammoth Screen production for BBC 2 with Tom Shankland directing and Howard Ward plays Gary Green in Sky Atlantic’s The Tunnel which returns for a 3rd and final series later this year.
Kriss Dosanjh will play Uncle Molinder in BBC’s The Boy with the Topknot a 90 minute single drama for BBC2 adapted by from Sathnam Sanghera’s critically acclaimed Memoir with Lynsey Miller directing. Joseph May plays Justin Trudeau in The Windsors, Sophie Stone films the key role of Jo Halley in the 4th season of Shetland, Anita Reynolds films Rellik, a new 6 parter for the BBC from the creators behind The Missing and Gary Oliver plays Franco in the ever popular Benidorm. Over in soap land Laura Rogers joins Eastenders as new character Corrine Mandel whilst in Coronation Street the Bethany/Nathan storyline continues to unfold with Chris Harper both brilliant and appalling as the groomer at its centre.

Jodie McNee and Sarah Malin join the cast of Anatomy of a Suicide directed by Katie Mitchell in her second collaboration with writer Alice Birch for the Royal Court. Amy Cudden and John Mackay have been cast in Occupational Hazards by Stephen Brown based on the memoir by Rory Stewart and directed by Simon Goodwin for Hampstead. At The Donmar, Robert Hands plays David Jones in the much anticipated Kids Company Musical Committee directed by Adam Penford whilst at The Arcola Sara Powell plays Dr Rieux in The Plague adapted from the Gogol novel with Neil Bartlett directing alongside Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare’s Richard III with Mehmet Ergen directing. Kate Fahy and Laura Rogers have been cast in the Southwark Playhouse revival of Sam Shepherd’s A Lie of the Mind whilst Jess Murphy takes on the title role in The Duchess of Malfi in Covent Garden with director Cecilia Mundi.

Ferdy Roberts begins rehearsals for Fatherland an ambitious new project for the the Royal Exchange/Manchester International Festival about contemporary fatherhood created by Frantic Assembly’s Scott Graham, Karl Hyde from Underworld and playwright Simon Stephens. Also at the Royal Exchange Geraldine Alexander will play Lady Russell in Persuasion directed by Jeff James whilst Colm Gormley joins the cast of The Country Girls an adaptation of the banned Edna O’Brian novel directed by Lisa Blair for Chichester Festival Theatre. Meanwhile, David Seadon Young has opened in An American In Paris at The Dominion to spectacular reviews, Gavin Spokes begins performances as Mr Snow in the ENO’s Carousel, Eugene O’Hare begins previews for The Ferryman, Tom Edden opens in Arturo Ui at The Donmar and Aiden Kelly begins performances in Salomé at The National Theatre.

London Theatre

David Seadon-Young20161122-1 will play the role of Adam in An American in Paris, the award winning Broadway musical opening at The Dominion Theatre in March 2017. Aleksandar Mikic reprises his role as The Lead in The Wish List directed by Matthew Xia at the Royal Court, Daniel Rabin opens in Robert Icke’s Mary Stuart at The Almeida, Howard Ward is in rehearsals for Wild Honey at the Hampstead Theatre, Gavin Spokes plays The Dame at this years Hackney Empire Panto Sleeping Beauty whilst Clemmie Sveaas returns to the Royal Opera House in Javier de Frutos’ production of Les Enfants Terribles. Laura Rogers will perform in Winter Solstice directed by Ramin Gray for The Orange Tree and Sarah Malin will play Prospero in The Tempest at the Southwark Playhouse directed by Amy Draper, whilst Arabella Neale takes over the role of Patricia in David Hare’s The Red Barn at The National’s Lyttleton Theatre from December.

Succesful openings include Tom Edden in Amadeus at The National Theatre, Stephen Kennedy in The Old Vic’s King Lear with Glenda Jackson, John Mackay in EV Crowe’s The Sewing Group at The Royal Court and Graham Turner in King Lear & Cymbeline for the RSC at The Barbican. Also transferring to London with the RSC are Sam Alexander and Peter McGovern in Much Ado About Nothing and Love’s Labour’s Lost playing in rep at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

At The Sheffield Crucible Josie Walker will join the cast of the Everyone’s Talking About Jamie playing Jamie’s mum Margaret in the coming-of-age story of a teenage drag queen directed by Jonathan Butterell. Lisa Palfrey joins the cast of Headlong’s new Jack Thorne play Junkyard directed by Jeremy Herrin, RADA Grad George Caple is to join the fist resident Rep company at The Liverpool Everyman in 25 years where roles will include playing Romeo in Romeo and Juliet directed by Nick Bagnall. Geoff Leesley has opened to excellent reviews in Trouble in Mind directed by Laurence Boswell at the Ustinov Studio Bath whilst Richard Dempsey plays JJ Silvers in Strictly Ballroom and Jenna Augen plays Grandma in The Witches, both opening at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Jason Callender meanwhile begins rehearsals for The Play That Goes Wrong Tour, Sandy Foster opens in Maria Aberg’s production of Fantastic Mr Fox touring the UK next year and Jude Monk McGowan takes Punchdrunks acclaimed London show Sleep No More to Shanghai.

20160801In theatre news Tom Edden will play The Emperor in Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus directed by Michael Longhurst for The National Theatre. Richard Teverson will play Sackville in Theatre Royal Bath’s production of The Libertine, directed by Terry Johnson coming to The Theatre Royal Haymarket in September. Stephen Kennedy joins the cast of Deborah Warner’s King Lear at the Old Vic this autumn with Glenda Jackson in the title role, Scott Karim returns to the Globe in Matthew Dunster’s Imogen and Amy Booth-Steel joins the company of Briony Kimmings’ musical A Pacifists Guide to The War on Cancer a co pro between The National Theatre and Complicite. At Regents Park, Tafline Steen and Jordan Mifsúd play Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Bingley in Pride and Prejudice, a revival of Deborah Bruce’s acclaimed production, this summer. Laura Rogers plays Dorothea in Tennessee William’s A Lovely Sunday For Creve Coeur at The Print Room. Derek Hutchinson, meanwhile, joins the cast of The Roundabout at The Park and Richard Dempsey plays Peter in Noel Cowards Home Chat at The Finborough theatre.

RSC transfers to the West End include Sam Alexander with Much Ado about Nothing and Peter McGovern in Love’s Labours Lost. Coming to The Barbican are Nicholas Lumley in Maria Aberg’s Doctor Faustus and Hywel Morgan with Polly Jerrold’s The Alchemist. Graham Turner meanwhile opens in Stratford as The Fool in Greg Doran’s King Lear prior to a Barbican run this autumn.

Out of town Geraldine Alexander heads to The Royal Exchange to play Sarah Turing in Breaking The Code directed by Rob Hastie, Rhys Rusbatch will play Captain Jack Absolute in The Rivals at Bristol Old Vic, Eugine O’Hare plays Sir Clifford in Sheffield Crucible’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover directed by Phillip Breen, Jason Callender joins the company of The Play that Goes Wrong on tour, and NYT graduate Melissa Vaughan plays Dora in Night Must Fall directed by Luke Sheppard and touring.
