Autumn Stage

Tom Edden returns to the Jamie Lloyd Company as De Guiche in Cyrano de Bergerac opposite James McCoy in the title role at The Playhouse Theatre. Thomas Coombes makes his Royal Court debut as Mark in A Kind of People, a new play by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti with Michal Buffong directing. Jodie Mcnee takes the title role of Faustus in That Damned Woman, a gender swap reimagining for Headlong Theatre opening at Lyric Hammersmith, Caroline Byrne directs. Scott Karim opens in The Arrival at The Bush Theatre, an exciting new family drama written and directed by Artistic Director Bijan Sheibani.

Gavin Spokes will play King George III in the phenomenon that is Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre whilst Ferdy Roberts also returns to the West End in the revival of Connor McPherson’s The Girl From the North Country at The Geilgud Theatre from December. Also opening is Josie Walker as Old Mrs Hempstock in The Ocean at the End of the Lane at The National Theatre.
Looking ahead Jenna Augen and Dorothea Myer Bennett will be playing Rosa and Hannah in Tom Stoppard’s epic new play Leopoldstadt which Patrick Marber directs for Sonia Friedmann Productions at The Wyndham’s Theatre early 2020. Dan Rabin transfers to the West End with Rob Icke’s Alemida Theatre production of The Doctor. Chris Harper joins the cast of Hitchcock classic Dial M For Murder, directed by Anthony Banks and opening at Richmond Theatre whilst Olwen May joins the cast of Band of Gold which Kay Mellor has adapted and will direct in a world stage premiere.

Recent openings to try and see include Ashna Rabheru in [BLANK], a new play by Alice Birch directed by Maria Aberg for The Donmar and Jack James Ryan in Chichester Festival Theatre’s Sing Yer Heart Out For the Lads directed by Nicole Charles.

Tafline Steen plays River in Appropriate by Brandon Jacobs -Jenkins at The Donmar which Ola Ince directs. Josie Walker returns to The National playing Old Mrs Hempstock in The Ocean At The End of The Lane , Neil Gamain’s fantasy novel adapted to the stage and directed by Katy Rudd. Ferdy Roberts plays Dr Walker in the first revival of Conor McPherson’s Girl From The North Country which returns to the West End at the Gielgud Theatre. Daniel Rabin joins Robert Icke’s final production of at The Almeida The Doctor, Natalie Radmall- Quirke joins the cast of Ned Bennet’s Equus which comes to the Trafalgar Studio’s and Sophie Duval and Sam Alexander reprise their roles in Laura Wade’s The Watsons which transfers from CFT to The Menier Chocolate Factory. At the Globe Sophie Stone is Jacques in As You Like It directed by Elle While, Anita Reynolds plays in The Merry Wives of Windsor, whilst Jenna Augen joins Bartholomew Fair with director Blanche Mcintyre.

Openings include Tamsin Carroll in Peter Gynt at The National directed by Jonathan Kent, Scott Karim in Oklahoma! at Chichester Festival Theatre director Jeremy Sam , Patrick Brennan in Greg Doran’s Measure for Measure at the RSC and Tomi Ogbaro in Dominic Hill’s A Midsummer Nights Dream at Regents Park. Rupert Goold’s The Hunt with Howard Ward has opened to rave reviews at The Almeida and Jodie McNee has earned high praise for her performance as Belvedere in Venice Preserved at RSC Stratford. Jordan Mifsúd and Dorothea Myer-Bennett continue in Rattigan’s While The Sun Shines at The Orange Tree whilst Hayley Carmichael has opened in Peter Brooks WHY? at Bouffes Du Nord Paris.

Gavin Spokes returns to the West End playing Charles Ingram, ‘the coughing major’ in James Graham’s new play Quiz. Directed by Daniel Evans, the Chichester Festival Production opens for a limited season at the Noel Coward Theatre from 31 March 2018. George Caple plays Alex in A Clockwork Orange and Patrick Brennan Iago in Othello both for Liverpool Everyman, Nicholas Lumley joins the NT touring production of This House whilst Molly Logan plays Ethel in Lucy Bailey’s production of Love From a Stranger, also on tour.

Josie Walker returns to the West End with Sheffield Crucible’s production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie in which she plays the lead role of Margaret; Jonathan Butterell directs opening at The Apollo Theatre in November. Olwen May plays the Butcher in St George and the Dragon with Lyndsey Turner directing for The National Theatre whilst Clemmie Sveaas will begin rehearsals for Pinocchio with John Tiffany directing. Also opening at The National this Autumn for a limited run is Oslo with Geraldine Alexander and Howard Ward, transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre from October. Tom Edden returns to the West End as he takes on the role of Mr Wormwood in Matilda for the RSC at The Cambridge Theatre. Lisa Palfrey, meanwhile continues as Big Mama in the Young Vic’s production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof at The Apollo. Scott Karim joins Nicholas Hytner’s exciting new venture at the Bridge Theatre for his inaugural show Young Marx, Geoff Leesley transfers with Trouble in Mind, Laurence Boswell’s acclaimed production from Theatre Royal Bath coming to the Print Room Coronet and Jenna Augen plays Val in The Knowledge at the Charing Cross Theatre with Maureen Lipman directing.

Laura Rogers joins the cast of Rules For Living with Simon Godwin directing for ETT with Natalie Radmall Quirke also joining the company playing the lead role of Valerie in their celebrated revival of The Weir. Theatre updates

In theatre news, Eugene O’Hare joins the cast of Sam Mendes’ Royal Court production of The Ferryman. Written by Jez Butterworth, the play is set in Northern Ireland during the height of The Troubles. Gavin Spokes will play Enoch Snow in Carousel for the ENO, Daniel Rabin joins the cast of Robert Icke’s Hamlet at The Almeida and Aidan Kelly has been cast as Abaddon in Yael Farber’s re-working of Salome coming to the National Theatre.

Tom Edden begins rehearsals for The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at The Donmar with Simon Evans directing, Charlotte Lucas starts rehearsals on Speech and Debate at the Trafalgar Studios in a new play by the American playwright Stephen Karam, Andrew Koji plays Huang in the RSC’s re-telling of the classic Chinese drama Snow In Midsummer directed by Justin Audibert and Roger Sloman rehearses Seventeen at Lyric Hammersmith.

Written by Jeff Pope and directed by Paul Whittington (Cilla, Mrs Biggs), this four part drama focuses on the murder of 11 year-old Rhys Jones in Croxteth, Liverpool in 2007 and the efforts of his parents to gain justice. Filming is now underway and will also feature Kent Riley and Howard Ward in guest roles across the series. Gary Oliver and Scott Karim join the cast of Britannia, Sky’s new 10 parter written by Jez Butterworth whilst Pooky Quesnel joins Hayley Carmichael in the E4/Netflix production Kiss Me First based on Lottie Moggarch’s thriller novel about stolen identity in the digital world. Melanie Kilburn and Tony Guilfoyle, meanwhile, feature in new Jimmy McGovern drama Broken, a 6 parter for the BBC and Thomas Coombes films the recurring role of Brother Anthony in Knightfall shooting in Prague for the History Channel.

In film news Carol Macready and Josie Walker film Amma Asante’s forthcoming drama Where Hands Touch set in Berlin during WW2, Nicholas Lumley films the sequel to Paddington playing Old Timer Jack and Alex Felton and Alex Blake shoot the Richard Eyre directed Children Act. Looking ahead, Roger Sloman and Nicholas Lumley begin rehearsals on the new Mike Leigh feature about the Peterloo massacre due to shoot 2017.

Laura Rogers will perform in Winter Solstice directed by Ramin Gray for The Orange Tree and Sarah Malin will play Prospero in The Tempest at the Southwark Playhouse directed by Amy Draper, whilst Arabella Neale takes over the role of Patricia in David Hare’s The Red Barn at The National’s Lyttleton Theatre from December.
